So this was that swanky new system? Kouji had skimmed over the email that had gone out, but all the same, he was interested in a new path for Rocket, it was just a shame that he was stuck with…him.

It was a dull anger that thrummed underneath the surface, and there sat undercurrents of another feeling; far less dull, far more apparent, and one he disliked even more. Both showed on his expression, his eyebrows furrowed together, and his lips pressed into a tightline, yet he didn’t look at Zev Harcourt, but instead on the Ruins before him.

The noises were strange, yet alluring; they were attempting to draw him in, or was that simply his curiosity? He couldn’t tell, but he attempted to shake it off by speaking; words into the air. ”What do you think, Harcourt? It might be a simulation, but you think it’s safe to go in?” He said as he looked into the darkness, he wanted to rush in; but he wanted to beat down that instinct just as well.

He’d be burned enough times for that, but well; if it’d burn the two of them equally he might’ve considered that, but he knew better than that.

Zev thought nothing of the assignment to run the RKS Simulation again with Kouji Matsubara. And if he noticed the way the younger man regarded him, an undercurrent of anger in his tension, Zev did not bother showing it.[break][break]

He was a superior guiding a subordinate through the simulation in an attempt to uncover more truths. That was all.[break][break]

"I've done this one once before," Zev replied, "and we resisted the pull of darkness. So let's see what happens when we advance into it."[break][break]

Without waiting for Kouji to agree, Zev walked forward into the beckoning tunnel.[break][break]

Kouji couldn’t focus, it wasn’t just a matter of waning attention, but the air itself that led to this, the call itself might have been part of it, but it didn’t really feel…Normal, and that sensation didn’t let him calm down.

He didn’t overtly fret, nor make any show of it, the last person he wanted to show that vulnerability to was Harcourt, just thinking the name left a bad sensation in his mouth; but he didn’t get to dwell on that, not with the pressure that pressed him against the wall, or the white sclera that looked at him, locked onto him.

”Un-” His voice stopped as words tried to force their way into his mind, they weren’t clear, but they were intense, and there was a clear meaning behind them. He just couldn’t grasp it, it didn’t make sense to him, as if there was a layer of noise stopping their words from truly getting across.

Do you think I want anything to do with you gu-” That was his impulsivity, even a dream that felt like twenty years didn’t get rid of that habit, he stopped himself. Zev was ready for the eyes, the darkness, and the emerging Unown. He gritted his teeth as an unseen force slammed him against a dusty, stone wall, the black crystals under his clothing dulling the blow.[break][break]

He shook his head, partly to clear it of the oppressing voices, and partly to answer Kouji.[break][break]

"The simulation will end in just a moment, so there's nothing for us to do but wait," he explained. And sure enough, the scene crumbled away, only to be replaced with another.

Kouji saw himself in some other place, was this also going to end negatively? There was a heavy weight, some kind of…Bomb? Considering this mountain, considering what it was; he knew just how something like this would end. He had been around it, yet he never stood above it.

He was sure this wasn’t the view that the top of Mt.Chimney offered, but at the same time he wished it were. He took in a deep breath, it had put him in a better mood, far better now after that whole spiel with the unown.

For the first time, Zev picked up on the hostility in Kouji's voice. His gaze slid sideways to regard the younger man, the stubborn grunt who believed he was better off as a lump of iron ore.[break][break]

"That's Beast Harcourt to you," Zev said, his voice as cold and cruel as the deepest Galarian winter.[break][break]

Kouji put a finger in his ear, even with the rumbling of conflict, Kouji smirked, as if to hide the momentary flinch. ”Aye aye Beast Harcourt.” He said passing over it as quickly as he could. It wasn’t fear, he tried to tell himself.

But the battle within wasn’t as important as the battle outside, Kouji knew that and his pokemon did too. It was a messy one, but their task was to be completed. The bomb fell, and that was that, everything was falling apart, the ground quaked loudly; and there was a flash, darkness, and before he knew it…

He stood before two men and two large dragons, he didn’t know of them. He hadn’t seen these pokemon beyond a few files, even if this was a simulation, even if it was just “pretend” it didn’t stop the sheer pressure that majestic creatures such as them gave off.

He’d had this thought a couple of times, but Legendary pokemon weren’t just legendary because of their power. The argument between the two men didn’t feel as important as that of the Pokemon.

”What’s the point in ideals if you can’t face the truth, you’re way too old to still be dreaming of silly things like that.” It was a bitter voice, but even so, he knew what choice he would make in this situation.
”Only Truth really matters.”

The battle at the top of Mt. Chimney was brutal. Pokémon and humans alike lay dead at Zev's feet by the end of it. With Kouji's help, he shoved the bomb into the burning heart of the volcano, then watched the world around them burn.[break][break]

The scene changed. Two men stood opposing each other, one claiming Truth, the other Ideals. Zev recognized their feud; he'd gone through this scene before, too.[break][break]

"The irony is that no matter which one you pick in this scenario, the result is basically the same," the Beast said. "So let's go with your choice and pick Truth."[break][break]

He did not care to reveal to Kouji that he disagreed. Truth, to Zev, changed as much as the tide to suit the person wielding it.[break][break]
